For several years, the "animal - bust", functions as the main subject in the work of Mitsy Groenendijk.

Gradually the animal image, develops into a metaphor, for the intuitive process of being. Which is initiated by the monkey sculptures in the series: "People see - People do" 2003/ 2004.

With her monkey sculptures, Mitsy Groenendijk gives a voice to the animal Other and elaborates a discourse on humanity’s fate and theirs. By performing caricatured versions of human role models, her pet-size monkeys seem to as much take revenge on us as to make us aware of how much we mimic ourselves and others in order to be. By disclosing the importance of repetition as key to the maintenance of the status quo, Mitsy’s sculptures stimulates the viewer to challenge his or her thinking habits
