Francesca Woodman (Denver, 3 aprile 1958 – New York, 19 gennaio 1981) è stata una fotografa statunitense.

Fu, nonostante una vita piuttosto breve, un'artista fotografica influente e importante per gli ultimi decenni del XX secolo.
Nel gennaio del 1981 ha pubblicato la sua prima (e unica, da viva) collezione di fotografie, dal titolo Some Disordered Interior Geometries (Alcune disordinate geometrie interiori). Nel corso dello stesso mese si suicidò gettandosi da un palazzo di New York all'età di 22 anni

There is a cool, quiet elegance to Alan Macdonald's paintings, which belies the disequilibrium at their heart. His figures, grey eyed and dreaming, might be time travellers, drawing distant cousinship from the portraits of Rembrandt or Frans Hals. His bucolic northern landscapes lay claim to an equally venerable artistic heritage. But if an accretion of the art historical past informs his imagery, it is transposed into a world where confidence has been lost, where the spiritual beliefs and myths which once bound man to nature, and through nature, to the divine, fail to connect.
These are beautiful paintings, all the more potent for their distilled sense of calm. Macdonald gives us no answers, but the questions he raises about the search for faith and identity in a difficult modern world touch a nerve, and in the faces of his pilgrims, we recognise ourselves.

Karl Doyle’s unique vision and affinity for diverse cultures is rooted in an early fascination with nomadic gypsies in his birthplace of Ireland – a group whose individuality and exotic visual appeal serve as one of the artist’s earliest and most profound memories.
After studying photography in Dublin, Karl relocated to London where he honed his creative and technical skills working with a broad range of visual artists and traveled to locations all over the globe. Curiosity brought Karl to Asia, where he discovered the Mongolian Nomads, ethereal characters who would comprise the first part of the Nomadic Worlds series.
Karl moved to New York in 1994 and was later fortunate to work on several advertising campaign projects with fashion visionary Thierry Mugler. In tandem with his own growing career, Karl’s distinct photographic style began to emerge in his own personal projects, drawing on his own talent, technical skills, and exposure to world cultures and fashion.

Karl Doyle’s Nomadic Worlds Series captures a rare authenticity that gives the viewer extraordinary access to these unusual worlds. Central to the work in the relationship between the subjects and their costumes, whether dictated by environmental and cultural factors or purely for the sake of a fashion statement as in being consciously “different.” The treatment of this relationship in the work draws attention to the fantasy in costume and magnifies the individuality of its characters, creating a timeless fairytale quality in the narrative where the subjects come complete with their implied tales. The narrative is further reinforced through separating the subjects from their environments, the use of meticulous lighting that has become the hallmark of the artist’s work, and his creative hand-printing process.
In the haunting faces of the Mongolian Nomads, and the Harajuku Girls of Tokyo and New York’s stylized sub-cultures, these nomadic worlds collide distinctively in outward appearances but share a timeless voice in the expression of each unique environment.

His more recent work titled “Secret Desires” a four year long study, is a conceptual juxtaposition of one of todays subculture’s and the erotic world of the 1930s Weimar Berlin. Focusing on the return of the corset or the practice of tight-lacing along with the popularity of latex, he choose to use these elements as his medium to contrast his subjects and to define the beauty of the constrained anatomy. The black and white images hold a vintage quality, evoking the past although reflecting the present as they meander through different scenarios of visual play for the viewer to anticipate.

Following a first solo show in London, The Triumph of Sign, an installation on the Pont Neuf, Astronomy Domine, and in keeping with the same obsession, Jean-Charles de Castelbajac now brings us The Tyranny of Beauty at La B.A.N.K.

For the past 40 years, Castelbajac has been using detourn and appropriations to create bridges between practices and signs and to trigger questions.

The tyranny in question is that of an insatiable need to please, of youth’s domination, of a quest for immortality and of the denial of time past.

Castelbajac adds trait, logo, sign or brand obliteration to classic master paintings. As if creams, capsules or other artifices could open up a path to and stamp their radiant faces with indelible copyrights.

The Chinese copyists’ oil paintings are based on ancestral techniques. They reduce to the state of manufacture a selection of Western Art’s masterpieces. By reproducing works from our heritage, the artist reclaims History and images of beauty at their height of refinement. His aim is to demonstrate that everyone can do beauty and good, like in the Snow White syndrome in a series of Flanders tapestries.

Laurie Lipton was born in New York and began drawing at the age of four. She was the first person to graduate from Carnegie-Mellon University in Pennsylvania with a Fine Arts Degree in Drawing (with honours). She has lived in Holland, Belgium, Germany and France and has made her home in London since 1986. Her work has been exhibited extensively throughout Europe and the USA.

Lipton was inspired by the religious paintings of the Flemish School. She tried to teach herself how to paint in the style of the 16th century Dutch Masters and failed. When traveling around Europe as a student, she began developing her very own peculiar drawing technique building up tone with thousands of fine cross-hatching lines like an egg tempera painting. “It’s an insane way to draw”, she says, “but the resulting detail and luminosity is worth the amount of effort. My drawings take longer to create than a painting of equal size and detail.”

ZSO is a collection of letters that I find aesthetically and phonetically beautiful. Together they make sound much like “so,” the adverb which means "to such a great extent.” I am a person of extremes, for better or worse (most often the latter), so the ring of it was fitting, and the moniker has since stuck for good.

I graduated from New York University's Gallatin School of Individualized Study with a concentration in Graphic Art and Postmodern Studies—I've been working in design and art direction ever since.

Nathalie Daoust’s latest project, Tokyo Hotel Story, continues her exploration of female sexuality and subversion of gender stereotypes. Spending several months in the Alpha In, one of the biggest S&M “love hotels” in Japan. Daoust photographed 39 women in their private rooms, surrounded by the specialist equipment and dressed in the regalia that define their trade. Her work takes the viewer beyond taboos while showing the universal human desire to escape reality and create fantasy worlds that often oscillate between dream, reality and perversion.

Augen Gallery has held three solo painting shows for me - in April 2005 (Vive Chrome), in August 2006 (Take Off) and 2007 I showed the Richter Scale, a painting installation. In 2008 and 2009 I also showed paintings with Jeffrey Crussell in California.

I due aspetti diventano chiari appena si è studiata l'immagine. Può essere letta sia
come una una bella donna che si guarda riflessa nello specchio;
oppure come un digrignante teschio.

Il motivo della popolarità di questo tipo di rappresentazione
- seguono altri esempi ispirati ad essa -
è dovuto all'effetto realistico e inquietante del doppio.
Questo quadro si chiama L'amore di Pierrot, l'autore è un anonimo del 1905.

Anche la Maison Dior si è ispirata al tema per il suo profumo Poison..

Non è casuale che il tema doppio della morte e della "pozione"
o profumo dal magico effetto siano associate
in queste ultime rappresentazioni.

L'illusione di conquistare l'amore o la bellezza attraverso un liquido magico è alla base della cultura occidentale che da "Tristano e Isotta" (XII sec.) non ha mai smesso di affascinare la gente ed è anche qui sempre strettamente legata alla caducità della vita.

Elene Usdin started out as an illustrator for books and magazines in France, and for broadsheets such as The Boston Globe, the Washington Post, and the New York Times, in the US. Her interest in photography started in 2002, after buying a new camera. Thinking that it was the best way to experiment and create with full control, she commenced by taking self-portraits.
After a series of self-portraits, she worked on a poster for the Opera du Rhin in France, alongside Hartlandvilla studios. For this, she dressed up as one of the characters in the show and posed for the portrait.
In 2006, she won the Picto Prize for Young Fashion Photography, and began working for magazines in Berlin, Amsterdam, and Paris. In 2007, she held an exhibtion at the AOP gallery in London, followed by another show at the galerie Le Carree in Lille the following year. She also won the PX3 Prize for Photography in 2008, for a self-portrait, and one featuring children.

Elene Usdin’s work is a representation of her dreams and nightmares. She thinks of an idea as a waking dream, and she proceeds to tell these stories through the use of fashion. It is always about women: the women of fairytales, of mythology, and of fantasy. She continues to take photographs of young models, with the aim of capturing their beauty and their magic.

Il processo pittorico di Valerio Carruba consiste nel dipingere ogni quadro due volte: dopo aver dipinto, secondo i canoni della pittura classica, con realismo e vigoria pittorica, un’immagine scelta innanzitutto per l’intrico di forme e materiali e dunque di pennellate che presenta, vi sovrappone una seconda versione della stessa immagine, replicando in maniera quasi automatica e distaccata la sua stessa precedente azione artistica. Così facendo, crea un fantasma. L’ambiguità nel lavoro di Carrubba sta nel decidere quale delle due stesure sia il fantasma. Perché quella che non vediamo non è una bozza, non è uno schizzo, non è una preparazione, ma una versione più pittorica, più finita: quello che uno spettatore ingenuo, o “borghese”, o comunque abituato alla pittura classica potrebbe definire, se mai lo vedesse, il “quadro vero”. Ed è proprio la morte del “quadro vero”, ovvero sommamente, irrimediabilmente, ritualmente falso che Carrubba celebra; dipingendolo e poi, nella quiete del suo studio, uccidendolo e mostrandocene l’ectoplasma. Naturalmente, questa produzione di “pitture, le quali contraddicessero la propria verità e non ponessero più alcuna questione riguardo all’aspetto finale”, questa “urgenza di contestare il visivo”, questa poetica del “niente da vedere” (sono tutte parole di Carrubba) genera una massa indistricabile di altre ambiguità, di contraddizioni e addirittura di fraintendimenti (benché il celebrare l’impotenza del linguaggio dovrebbe svuotare di significato l’idea stessa del fraintendimento).La più clamorosa di tali contraddizioni mi sembra il romanticismo insito in questa disgregazione di una concezione romantica dell’arte. Carrubba non si sottrae a queste contraddizioni e non le combatte. Le cavalca e le spinge all’estremo, portandole a una proliferazione quasi caotica che ne induce l’esplosione. E dunque, nel “denunciare l’impossibilità del linguaggio”, dipinge immagini melodrammatiche e quasi narrative; nel decretare l’inutilità della tecnica, si dedica ad alti virtuosismi pittorici. Soprattutto, nel rappresentare il “deserto della visione” (attività già di per sé contraddittoria), ricorre a un gioco di rimandi metaforici: le sue figure, impossibili cadaveri viventi, mostrano ciò che sta dentro di loro, laddove la superficie dell’opera cela ciò che sta dietro; il pathos sui loro volti è quello dei santini, dei Sacri Cuori o delle figure anatomiche della Specola, ma è anche quello dell’artista che simula e disgrega se stesso.

He has an unique technique of painting. Some of his works are painted twice; one brushstroke lying on top of the other. This double painting emphasizes the colors and repeats the form in order not to describe them but almost to deny them. Kerry Skarbakka is a visual artist working in photography and video. He received his B.A. in Studio Art with an emphasis in Sculpture in 1994 from the University of Washington School of Art. Liu Baojun is a modern Chinese painter whose work encountered in the Shanghai ‘SOHO’ of New York lore, the Moganshan District. The Moganshan District is set off from droll tiers of concrete apartment skyscrapers by the low scroll of a 6 foot graffiti wall. The District itself is a maze of warehouse galleries, nooked with tiny workspaces for the artists who display there.

Liu Baojun’s work was a clear standout from the din, both in subject matter and technique. While technical excellence in China is itself not unusual, nonconformity in subject matter and technical excellence was, most certainly.

Interestingly, the women that he paints are not of the diminutive, ladylike portraiture traditional in China. Rather, the women appear in Western, Eastern and no dress and are in various positions of repose, smoking (a taboo for women in China). This art is playful, beautiful and provocative in a thoughtful way. It has content that doesn’t dead end in rumination.

Alex Gross received a BFA with honors from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California, in 1990. Since then, he has been a successful gallery artist. Alex taught at his Alma Mater from 1994 until 2005, and was a recipient of two faculty grants there. A recipient of the prestigious Artist Fellowship from the Japan Foundation in 2000, Alex spent two months traveling throughout Japan, researching and collecting a wide variety of Japanese Fine and Commercial art. Part of his collection was compiled and published by Taschen under the title Japanese Beauties in 2004.

The Art of Alex Gross, Alex’s monograph from Chronicle Books, was released in 2006. The 160 page, 9.5 by 12 inch Hardcover book features all of Alex’s gallery work and has over 90 full color plates. The book contains etchings, silkscreens, sketches and vintage photographs as well as a wonderful introduction by renowned Science Fiction writer, Bruce Sterling.

Pesonale di Ray Caesar a Mondo Bizzarro Gallery.
Nato a Londra nel 1958, Caesar vive a Toronto da circa 40 anni. Le sue mostre si sono tenute prevalentemente negli Stati Uniti, ma anche in Canada, in Australia, in Francia e in Inghilterra. Laureato in architettura presso l´ Art College for Design & Architecture di Ontario, Ray Caesar ha lavorato come illustratore all´interno del dipartimento di arte e fotografia medica di un ospedale pediatrico di Toronto. Parallelamente, ha operato per diversi anni nell'industria del cinema e della televisione, come addetto agli effetti speciali e all´animazione digitale, oltre a dedicarsi alla pittura. Solo quando decide di lasciare il lavoro, dopo una serie di eventi dolorosi che colpiscono la sua vita privata, egli diviene l´artista che oggi conosciamo. Abbandona la pittura e da quel momento la sua immaginazione, arricchita dai suoi ricordi, dalle sensazioni e dalle riflessioni su ciò che ha vissuto, trova forma in figure tridimensionali che realizza al computer con il programma "Maya", operando in maniera simile a quando lavorava nell'industria del cinema. In un´intervista, l´artista dice di voler costruire mondi protetti, paradisi onirici in cui l´odio e la paura (temi a lui particolarmente cari) trovano una diversa collocazione. Le figure umane che egli costruisce sono senza tempo, seducenti e luminose come cristalli, tali da emanare il fascino di gelidi angeli, simboli di assoluta purezza capaci di sfidare qualsiasi forma di crudeltà e ingiustizia.

I was born in London England in 1958 and the youngest of a very strange and sometimes frightening family. When I was fifteen I met a girl called Michiko and I have been in love with her ever since. Due to a twist of fate I ended up working in a Children's Hospital for 17 years and although I didn't like the job very much it changed my life and led me down a path to where I am now.
Those years taught me about the cruelties of Man and Nature but also that Miracles do exist and are often the product of our own actions.
I make pictures all day because I really don't have a choice in the matter and I am lucky that I love doing it ...there was a time I hated doing it but that is nicely packaged in pretty paper and put away in the past. I beleive that you must have both sunlight and moonlight to see the truth. I am a bit of a hermit and usually have to have an internal argument to open the front door and step outside my house. I never learned to drive a car because I believe that red is the color of action and green is a calming color ... so I walk through life slowly and that has been a blessing............well enough about me! .....did I mention I love dogs ?

Cecil Beaton (1904-1980), nato a Londra da una ricca famiglia di commercianti di legno, si trasferi' a New York, dove lavoro' per Vogue e Vanity Fair e frequento' il mondo dell'arte e dello spettacolo. Nel 1958 vinse l'Oscar per i costumi di Gigi e nel 1964 vinse il secondo Oscar per i costumi di Audrey Hepburn in My Fair Lady. Nella sua lunga carriera scrisse anche diversi libri, tra cui il migliore e' forse The Glass of Fashion, 1954, affettuoso ritratto di un'epoca e dei suoi protagonisti.
Fotografo, diarista, caricaturista, illustratore, scenografo e costumista, Cecil Beaton sicuramente riusci' a vivere all'altezza delle sue stesse affermazioni. Una volta scrisse che bisognava essere "audaci, diversi, assolutamente non pratici, e asserire l'integrità dell'intenzione e dell'immaginazione contro coloro che si muovevano al sicuro, le creature dei luoghi comuni, gli schiavi dell'ordinario". Fu proprio questa ambizione e questo sguardo eccentrico che riusci' a produrre un vasto corpus di lavori fotografici molto originali.

Sir Cecil Walter Hardy Beaton CBE, (1904 – 1980) was an English fashion and portrait photographer and an Academy Award-winning stage and costume designer for films and the theatre.
He also set up his own studio, and one of his earliest clients and, later, best friends was Stephen Tennant; Beaton's photographs of Tennant and his circle are considered some of the best representations of the "Bright Young Things" of the twenties and thirties.
Beaton is best known for his fashion photographs and society portraits. He worked as a staff photographer for Vanity Fair and Vogue in addition to photographing celebrities in Hollywood.

Candid dolls full of bruises, gaged, tied from tightened laces and dissected. He’s a provoker, and with his art he reveals the contradictions of the society. COLIN CHRISTIAN

Colin Christian was born in London on March 30th 1964 to a loving and outgoing mother. He hated school and apart from art classes found the whole thing rather frustrating and useless. At the age of 15 he left school and lived for a year in Morocco with his mother, brother and sister. The cultural difference was very liberating. Upon his return to England at 16 he worked at a record music store and in 1982 became a DJ and was a stage manager for a large nightclub in the south of England. This is where he met his wife Sas in 1989.

In 1992 Colin moved to the U.S where he and his wife started a small business making latex clothing for fetish stores around the country. Their work was featured in Penthouse and Skin Two magazines. Taking what he had learned from the clothing manufacturing and combining it with his interest in movie special fx, Colin started to produce fiberglass figures and displays. In 1998 he produced his first production figure, an anime girl called "Suki" - a towering 7 feet tall and anatomically correct.

Colin decided to put his career on hold for a few years to take up commercial sculpture. Sas was developing as a painter and if this was to be encouraged she had to be able to devote herself full time, learning how to paint. The commercial work paid the bills for both of them and would support them both until Sas was ready to support herself. During this time Colin produced pieces for stores, museums and various businesses. A robot he made for the American Heart Association was interviewed by Katie Couric on the Today show and he also constructed the worlds largest mousetrap for pest control company Truly Nolen, which is now featured in the Guinness Book of World Records.

Colin now works full time on his original sculptures, finding inspiration in old sci-fi movies, pinup girl/supermodels, anime, ambient electronic music and H.P. Lovecraft. In 2004 he started using silicone in his sculptures, a difficult material to use but one that helps him achieve his goal of true cartoon realism, a line drawing made flesh. He is not looking to create every imperfection and flaw, but to take the exaggerations and perfections of cartoons and make them into a realistic 3D form.

Banksy is a quasi-anonymous British graffiti artist.
He is believed to be a native of Yate, South Gloucestershire, near Bristol and to have been born in 1974, but there is substantial public uncertainty about his identity and personal and biographical details.
According to Tristan Manco, Banksy "was born in 1974 and raised in Bristol, England. The son of a photocopier technician, he trained as a butcher but became involved in graffiti during the great Bristol aerosol boom of the late 1980s
His artworks are often satirical pieces of art on topics such as politics, culture, and ethics.
His street art, which combines graffiti writing with a distinctive stencilling technique, is similar to Blek le Rat, who began to work with stencils in 1981 in Paris and members of the anarcho-punk band Crass who maintained a graffiti stencil campaign on the London Tube System in the late 1970s and early 1980s.
His art has appeared in cities around the world.
Banksy's work was born out of the Bristol underground scene which involved collaborations between artists and musicians.

Banksy does not sell photos of street graffiti.

Art auctioneers have been known to attempt to sell his street art on location and leave the problem of its removal in the hands of the winning bidder.

The enigmatic, dreamlike paintings of Mike Worrall are often inspired by historical themes. Informed by his work in film, Worrall deals with the sublime in his hyperreal depictions of the mysterious. As in a dream, the quiet façade and the beauty of the large scale oil paintings masks the intriguing content and enormous energy underpinning the works.

I have been painting since the early 1960's and am almost entirely self taught. I still retain the basic technique and style developed in these early years. I am committed to exploring the subconscious and I like Paul Delvaux and Max Ernst amongst others.
I've worked in the feature film industry as an Ideas Artist. You can see my work on Alien III website. I was told by Roman Polanski that a painting of mine he had, gave him the idea of making the film Macbeth. He based the second scene on the painting. I have works in the collections of Victor Lownes, Alan Price of the Animals, Roman Polanski, Nicholas Roeg, Vincent Ward, Alex Proyas and many others.
As a child I was always intrigued by paintings involving some sought of mystery element. So I have tended to be drawn in this direction myself. Get the viewer guessing and wondering what it's about! Quite often I’m not sure myself but for some inexplicable reason it might work as a picture. I might not understand it myself even. It may be an expression on a face or just a pose or location.
I'm a firm believer that I should not have to attempt to explain the enigma to people and that the picture should retain some mystery for a lasting interest. This I hasten to add is not so with all work off course! I’m only referring to my surreal content paintings!

William Mortensen was a popular celebrity portrait photographer in the 1930s, churning out glam images for the movie magazines. But he was also a rebel whose special effects images prefigure the age of Photoshop.

Book critic Cary Loren has a great essay about Mortensen's work on bibliophile blog A Journey Round My Skull. He writes that Mortensen's arresting, bizarre work has been mostly forgotten because it didn't fit into the early twentieth century's passion for photographic realism. Unlike influential contemporaries like Ansel Adams, Mortensen refused to reproduce what he saw realistically.

Wim Delvoye personalità originalissima, estrosa e penetrante allo stesso tempo.
Il suo lavoro è l’esatta traduzione del suo spirito e del suo pensiero: le opere, quasi sfacciatamente pop ed irriverenti rispetto all’aura di rispetto attribuita all’arte – lui non disdegna di mischiare e confondere gli stili, i soggetti e con essi le nostre esperienze e certezze – trasgrediscono ogni schema e, in ogni contaminazione che le compone, acuiscono il senso tanto di ciò che sembrano dissacrare quanto di ciò che paiono celebrare. L’estetica (se non anti-estetica) di Delvoye si volge alle cose di tutti i giorni, alla gente comune, alle consapevolezze diffuse e a queste, in una cortocircuitazione rappresentativa e di senso, sovrappone, fino ad ibridarle in nuove risultanze, contenuti e riferimenti più importanti e profondi. Davanti ai suoi interventi non si rimane immuni dall’essere immediatamente divertiti, ma di conservare poi anche una certa drammatica impressione di disorientamento.
Nelle sue opere appare forte l’elemento dell’ironia, dell’irriverenza, della dissacrazione. Ogni dissacrazione è il risultato della lotta di classe o, per lo meno, il mettere in questione l’ordine sociale.
Poi ci sono anche i maiali tatuati, resi pelli o sculture.
La sua opera, forse la più conosciuta, la Cloaca, che non è altro che una macchina per produrre escrementi, un progetto complesso ed elaborato.

Wim Delvoye è nato a Wervik nel 1965. Vive e lavora tra Grand, Berlino e Pechino.

His work is of a hybrid nature, a good example
being Cloaca, the famous mechanical digestive apparatus that produces “artists’ shit”.
He takes a shrewd pleasure in abolishing distinctions between beauty and ugliness and purity and impurity by mixing craftsmanship, technology, the scatological and the sacred. Delvoye has created the metallic, gothic-inspired chapel with stained glass windows containing subversive imagery specially for Mudam.
The artist makes reference to his own work in black, grey and coloured glass. Obscene gestures, kisses, human intestines and skeletons from Cloaca are x-rayed, thus gaining the status of pagan stained glass windows.
His x-rayed pieces of meat unveil their atheist message thanks to the light that
stained glass once rendered divine.
The skulls, the bones and their by-products are grimacing, cynical modern vanities.

Viktor Pivovarov' (Russian: Виктор Пивоваров; born 1937) along with Ilya Kabakov and Erik Bulatov, he was one of the leading artists of the Moscow Conceptualist artistic movement of the 1960s and 1970s. His work reflected the complete ideologization of the Soviet lifestyle, often simultaneously expressing nostagia and disgust for this lifestyle.

Pivovarov was also a prolific illustrator of children's books, with over 50 books to his credit. He moved from Moscow to Prague in 1982, and continues to live there to date.
